Title: Support and Justice for the Iranian People


1. WHEREAS: The Associated Students, Inc. (AS) is the official voice of over 38,000 students at California State University Northridge; AND

2. WHEREAS: AS is the primary advocate for students at CSUN and provides excellent, meaningful programs and services designed to create and enhance a spirited, learning focused campus environment; AND

3. WHEREAS: In accomplishing its mission, A.S. has the responsibility to inform students of key issues that affect our diverse communities; AND

4. WHEREAS: Acknowledging the fact that Los Angeles is home to the largest Iranian population outside of Iran itself; AND

5. WHEREAS: The Islamic Republic of Iran has been in power since 1979 due to the Iranian revolution, overthrowing the previous monarchy and replacing it with an authoritarian dictatorship and regime; AND

6. WHEREAS: The Islamic Republic of Iran has stripped away the rights of its people, suppressing the freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and violates international human rights, including a mandate for women to wear a religious article of clothing known as a hijab; AND

7. WHEREAS: Iranian governmental and police authorities persecute minority religions and cultures, such as members of the Baha’i faith, where numerous religious sites have been destroyed, individuals evicted from their homes, and over 200 Baha’i executed on the basis of their religion since the instatement of the Islamic regime; AND

8. WHEREAS: Civilians are punished in cruel and unjust manners for not obeying the mandated hijab rule, with punishments being enforced to the extent of torture, death and persecution; AND

9. WHEREAS: In the event of the death of Mahsa Amini, a woman who was beaten by the morality police of Iran and died shortly after, the Iranian people engaged in civil unrest and protests, both within the nation and globally, demanding justice for her death, and the execution of many others; AND

10. WHEREAS: A significant majority of the Iranian people, both within the country of Iran and globally, wish to bring an end to the Islamic regime and replace it with a democratic and just government, which has been met with more detainment and over 75 confirmed murders internally thus far since the beginning of the 2022 protests; AND

11. WHEREAS: The Islamic government of Iran has cut internet access for the people of Iran, denying them the ability to voice or share the unrest occurring internally within the nation, or communicate with others both for recreational, social, or civil purposes, and preventing the people the ability to assemble; AND

12. WHEREAS: The oppression of Iranian women, and the Iranian people as a whole, is an unjust matter which has gone on for far too long, which effects not only the country of Iranian, but Iranian or Persian communities globally, including the prevalent community at CSUN; THEREFORE LET IT BE

1. RESOLVED: The Associated Students, Inc. stands in solidarity with the People of Iran, and wants to bring attention and awareness to their plight hoping that freedom and liberation can be achieved. The Persian students of CSUN are affected by this issue as their relatives and homeland are under constant threat and oppression.

2. RESOLVED: The Associated Students, Inc. will begin a social media campaign to bring awareness to the issue at hand, as well as other methods to help at the discretion of the current administration; AND LET IT BE

3. RESOLVED: The Associated Students, Inc. Asks University President Dr. Erika Beck, as well as CSU Interim Chancellor Jolene Koester, to put out a statement covering the injustices facing the Iranian people, raising awareness of the issues at hand for the general student body as well as providing methods in which students can provide aid or relief for those affected; AND LET IT BE

4. RESOLVED: The Associated Students, Inc. hereby calls on the President of the United States to condemn the actions and injustices of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and implement foreign international policy that will operate in aid of the Iranian people in their quest for justice and desire to eradicate the Iranian dictatorship; AND LET IT BE FINALLY

5. RESOLVED: That copies of this resolution be distributed widely, including but not limited to the following:
