Title: Condemning the Rise of Hate Crimes Against Asian Americans


1. WHEREAS: The Associated Students, Inc. (AS) is the official voice of over 38,000 students at California State University Northridge; AND

2. WHEREAS: AS is the primary advocate for students at CSUN and provides excellent, meaningful programs and services designed to create and enhance a spirited, learning focused campus environment; AND

3. WHEREAS: AS and CSUN condemn all acts of hatred towards any ethnic, racial, or religious group; AND

4. WHEREAS: Xenophobia is defined as the fear and hatred against people from other countries; AND

5. WHEREAS: The United Nations has reported extreme increases in racially motivated violence against Asians globally; AND

6. WHEREAS: Xenophobic rhetoric that connects the COVID-19 pandemic continues to drive hate crimes against Asian Americans; AND

7. WHEREAS: Stop AAPI Hate is a national coalition aimed at addressing anti-Asian discrimination founded by the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council (A3PCON), Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA), and San Francisco State University’s Asian American Studies Department; AND

8. WHEREAS: According to Stop AAPI Hate, nearly 3,800, 149% surge of anti-Asian hate incidents were reported between March 19, 2020 and February 28, 2021 in the United States in forms including, but not limited to verbal harassment, physical assault, civil rights violations, and online harassment; AND

9. WHEREAS: On Tuesday, March 16, 2021, a deranged gunman brutally attacked 8 women, 6 of whom were of Asian descent and tragically lost their lives, which rightfully sparked further distress and anger in the Asian American and Pacific Islander community; AND

10. WHEREAS: 10% of the student population at CSUN are Asian; AND

11. WHEREAS: CSUN must continue to sustain diversity and to forge pathways for student success; THEREFORE, LET IT BE

1. RESOLVED: Associated Students at California State University of Northridge stands with our students of Asian descent and condemn the actions of anti-Asian rhetoric and violence in all forms; AND LET IT BE FURTHER

2. RESOLVED: That the Associated Students, Inc. hereby designates each first Senate meeting of May in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month as the “Day of Remembrance for Lives Lost & Affected in the Asian American & Pacific Islander Community” due to the xenophobia toward Asian peoples; AND LET IT BE FURTHER

3. RESOLVED: That the Associated Students, Inc. hereby designates a moment of silence on the Day of Remembrance for Lives Lost & Affected in the Asian American & Pacific Islander Community to remember and honor those who lost their lives; AND LET IT BE FURTHER

4. RESOLVED: On the Day of Remembrance for Lives Lost & Affected in the Asian American & Pacific Islander Community, Associated Students, Inc. will conduct a Tradition of the Rose Ceremony in memory of the lives lost at the hands of xenophobia toward Asian peoples, whose descendants play an integral role in today’s CSUN Community; AND LET IT BE FURTHER

5. RESOLVED: That Associated Students Leadership advocate for the CSUN’s Faculty Senate to pass a similar resolution to recognize and honor the lives lost and lives affected in the Asian American and Pacific Islander community due to hate and encourages CSUN to take actions to continue to support their students of Asian American and Pacific Islander descent; AND LET IT BE FURTHER

6. RESOLVED: That copies of this resolution be distributed widely, including but not limited to the following:
