Title: AS Response to Criminal Justice Reform Events


1. WHEREAS: The Associated Students, Inc. (AS) is the official voice of over 38,000 students at California State University Northridge; AND

2. WHEREAS: AS is the primary advocate for students at CSUN; AND

3. WHEREAS: On May 25 2019, George Floyd was killed of asphyxiation as direct consequence of actions that police officers in the Minneapolis Police Department took; AND

4. WHEREAS: The murder of George Floyd is tragically only one of the most recent in a string of murders in the black community, perpetuated in this country since even before its founding; AND

5. WHEREAS: The murder of George Floyd is tragically in accordance with the historic conditions of America’s black population; AND

6. WHEREAS: CSUN has a vibrant black student population, which has demonstrated engagement, entrepreneurship and leadership amongst other qualities on campus; AND

7. WHEREAS: AS finds responsibility to take leadership and work to protect our black student population against potential violence; AND

8. WHEREAS: AS understands that the criminal justice system affects those of every color and background; AND

9. WHEREAS: Towards that end, AS worked to provide itself and the campus community with programming around the criminal justice system in the fall of 2020; AND

10. WHEREAS: AS finds responsibility to engage in policy advocacy and represent student voices around our expectations for public safety; THEREFORE LET IT BE

1. RESOLVED: That AS seeks to review and revamp the CSUN PD as well as institute new programs in the university that students would be able to refer to instead of the police; AND LET IT BE FURTHER

2. RESOLVED: Should there be a lapse in service, AS finds it equally unacceptable to be policed in the interim by agencies like the LAPD or LASD, California Highway Patrol, or other agencies; AND LET IT BE FURTHER

3. RESOLVED: That moneys formerly intended for our policing services should be redistributed towards public safety measures otherwise; AND LET IT BE FURTHER

4. RESOLVED: That AS will work with, and act as liaison between (as appropriate), the CSUN student population and the CSUN police department to transition the campus away from a problematic model of ensuring public safety; AND LET IT BE FURTHER

5. RESOLVED: That in seeking the fundamental reform of our local police department, we hope to set an example for our local municipalities and society at large; AND LET IT BE FURTHER

6. RESOLVED: That copies of this resolution be distributed widely, including but not limited to the following:
