Title: 3% Annual Housing Increase


1. WHEREAS: The Associated Students, Inc. (AS) is the official voice of over 38,000 students at California State University Northridge; AND

2. WHEREAS: AS is the primary advocate for students at CSUN and provides excellent, meaningful programs and services designed to create and enhance a spirited, learning focused campus environment; AND

3. WHEREAS: Apartment/Room rates within Student Housing and Conference Services (Housing) fluctuate annually without a standardized amount of increase each year due to a variety of contributing factors; AND

4. WHEREAS: For 2020-2021 academic year there was a 3% increase in rental rates from that of the previous year; AND

5. WHEREAS: Annually, Housing seeks council with the Campus Fee Advisory Committee (CFAC) – a group providing advice to the University President regarding proposed new campus-based student fees or adjustments to existing campus-based student fees, and comprised of students, staff, faculty and administrators – to explain how rental income fees would be utilized to support general operations and functions for the following academic year; AND

6. WHEREAS: Documents informing students/families/public about how CSUN Housing rental fees are determined, how fees are used, or factors that may cause annual rate increases are not easily found/accessible online; AND

7. WHEREAS: According to the CSU’s website, The CSU states that an integral part of “student success means making college more affordable for Californians,” AND

8. WHEREAS: Students have stated that rental increases lead to financial burdens which act as obstacles that impact their success including the need to work more hours and spend less time studying, and/or taking on more debt, AND

9. WHEREAS: Creating transparency of past and current rental rates allow students the opportunity to better reduce obstacles (ex: plan for spending/saving in the future); THEREFORE, LET IT BE

1. RESOLVED: That the Associated Students, Inc. highly recommends that CSUN Student Housing creates a section on their website dedicated to transparency of housing pricing, including an account of annual rental prices over the past 5 years, and a breakdown of how student rental fees are utilized to create their overall experience (ex: room/board, mentorship, cleaning fees, internet, etc.); AND LET IT BE FURTHER

2. RESOLVED: That copies of this resolution be distributed widely, including but not limited to the following:
