Title: Associated Students Support for AB 1460


1.WHEREAS: The Associated Students, Inc. (A.S.) is the official voice of over 38,000 students at California State University Northridge (CSUN); and

2.WHEREAS: A.S. is the primary advocate for students at CSUN and provides excellent, meaningful programs and services designed to create and enhance a spirited, learning-focused campus environment; and

3.WHEREAS: AB 1460 is a bill that, if enacted by the state of California, would legally establish an ethnic studies requirement throughout the CSU system; and

4.WHEREAS: CSUN students fought for the creation of ethnic studies courses, even resulting in students and protesters being harassed and assaulted to establish ethnic studies departments at CSUN; and (Broesamle, 1993)

5.WHEREAS: The Africana studies department of CSUN was established through student protest in 1968, leading to the establishment of the Chicano Studies Department in the fall of 1969; and (Broesamle, 1993)

6.WHEREAS: Many students throughout the CSU system and various student bodies and organizations have demonstrated their support for the passage of an ethnic studies requirement and that Associated Students is the primary body established to represent these student concerns; and

7.WHEREAS: Research shows that all students, not just students of color, benefit academically and socially from participating in Ethnic Studies (Bowman, 2010); therefore let it be

1.RESOLVED: Associated Students supports AB 1460 and supports a mandatory ethnic studies requirement established across the CSU system; and let it be further

2.RESOLVED: Associated Students recognizes the demonstrations put together by students across the CSU System in support of AB1460; and let it be further

3.RESOLVED: Associated Students encourages the California legislature to move forward with the passage of AB 1460; and let it be finally

4.RESOLVED: That copies of this resolution be distributed widely, including but not limited to the following:

  • Governor Gavin Newsom
  • Congressman Bob Hertzberg
  • University President Dianne F. Harrison
  • Provost Mary Beth Walker
  • Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Watkins
  • CSU Board of Trustees
  • The Sundial
  • Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel
