Title: Support of Raising the Age Limit of Purchasing Firearms and Fixing NICS 4477, and Opposition to the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017

1. WHEREAS: The Associated Students, Inc. (AS) is the official voice of over 40,000 students at California State University Northridge; AND

2. WHEREAS: AS is the primary advocate for students at CSUN and provides excellent, meaningful programs and services designed to create and enhance a spirited, learning focused campus environment; AND

3. WHEREAS: AS is always trying to get more students involved and increase student participation within the many programs and services we offer; AND

4. WHEREAS: The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act will allow a qualified individual from another state to possess a concealed handgun on California school campuses without being subject to the federal prohibition; AND

5. WHEREAS: California has laws already in place making it illegal for anyone other than certain appointed peace officers, authorized conceal carriers and unauthorized persons, to carry a firearm on California school campuses; AND

6. WHEREAS: NICS 4477 is the security background check for purchasing firearms and currently needs to be fixed to address the problem of selling firearms to criminals; THEREFORE LET IT BE

1. RESOLVED: AS supports the idea of raising the age of purchasing a rifle and a shotgun from 18 to 21; AND LET IT BE FURTHER
2. RESOLVED: That AS strongly opposes allowing more guns on campus as this increases the possibility of an incident happening on the CSUN campus; AND LET IT BE FURTHER
3. RESOLVED: That AS strongly opposes the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017 as this allows a qualified individual for a conceal carry permit from another state to come to our schools who may not have passed the requirements in California to acquire a conceal carry permit; AND LET IT BE FURTHER
4. RESOLVED: That AS believes only authorized peace officers should be allowed to have a gun, concealed or not, on the CSUN campus; AND LET IT BE FURTHER
5. RESOLVED: That AS supports the fixing of NICS 4477 to federalize the background check data bases to prevent convicted criminals from purchasing firearms; AND LET IT BE KNOWN FURTHER
6. RESOLVED: That copies of this resolution be distributed widely, including but not limited to the following:
