Vice President

Authority:
This Code receives its authority under Article V, Section 4 of the Associated Students Constitution.

Purpose:
The purpose of this Code is to outline and define the duties and responsibilities of the Vice President.

STANDARDS OF IMPLEMENTATION:
This Code shall be effective when approved by a majority of the total voting membership of the Associated Students Senate.

AMENDMENTS:
This Code shall be amended when approved by a majority of the total voting membership of the Associated Students Senate.

APPOINTMENT, TENURE AND RESPONSIBILITY

• The Vice President shall be elected, from the same ticket as the President, in compliance with the Code on Elections and the A.S Constitution.
• Should the position be vacated during the term, the President shall post an announcement of the vacancy for two (2) weeks as stated in the A.S. Constitution (Article VI, Section 2). Applicants shall be interviewed and from the eligible candidates, the President shall select an appointee. The appointee must be approved by a majority of the total voting membership of Senate.
  • The Vice President may be removed only by procedures as outlined in ARTICLE XI – RECALL AND INITIATIVE of the A.S. Constitution.
• The term of office for the Vice President shall be from the first day following the end of the Spring semester up to, and including, the last day of the Spring semester, concurrent with the Associated Students President’s term of office. Should the office be vacated during the term, the new appointee’s tenure of office shall end with the term of the A.S. President.
• The Vice President shall be responsible for the execution of all duties assigned by the Associated Students President.
  

DUTIES

Senate

• The Vice President shall be a voting member at all Senate meetings.
• The Vice President shall preside over the Senate meetings in the absence of the President.
• The Vice President shall oversee and supervise the Senate.
• The Vice President shall ensure that throughout the interview process for vacant Senate seats the Chair of Outreach and Recruitment considers the appropriate Senate representative’s feedback, as per the Chair of Outreach and Recruitment Code.
• The Vice President and/or their designee shall check-in with Senators monthly or at the Vice President’s discretion.

a. Senators shall submit monthly reports to the Vice President

b. The Vice President and/or their designee shall notify the Senators when they turn in their monthly reports late. Notifications shall also be sent when the Senator has submitted late reports twice, as it will be reflected as a 0.5 absence.

• The Vice President shall work collaboratively with the Attorney General to oversee Senate attendance and coordinate the notification process as stated in the Senate Standing Rules.
• The Vice President shall collect reports from Senate members assigned to University Committees. Reports shall be shared in the Senate meeting agendas under the Information items section.

• The monthly report shall include sections with updates on the duties and responsibilities, as stated in the Senate Standing Rules, including but not limited to the semester event, personal project, Standing Committee work, and office hours usage.

Cabinet

• The Vice President shall serve as a member of the AS President’s Cabinet.
• The Vice President shall chair the Council of Chairs, pursuant to the Code on the Council of Chairs.

• The Council of Chairs shall meet monthly.
• Additional meetings shall be called by the President or Vice President as requested by the committee.

• The Vice President shall have the authority to jointly oversee the duties of the Chief of Staff, Attorney General, and Executive Assistant with the AS President and shall conduct check-ins as deemed necessary.
• The Vice President is recommended to oversee Cabinet members alongside the President.

Associated Students as a Whole

• The Vice President shall be a member of the A.S. Personnel Board.
• The Vice President shall be appointed as a member to the Instructionally Related Activities Board (IRA).
• The Vice President shall lead and coordinate programming for promotion of student academic success, education on resources, campus belongingness, and spirited culture; and may delegate as deemed fit.
• The Vice President shall lead any special projects for the benefit of A.S. or CSUN in consultation with the president.
• The Vice President shall serve on The Annual End of the Year Celebration Awards Group.

Campus

• The Vice President shall attend Standing Committee meetings based on availability.
• The Vice President shall attend various CSUN Campus Committee meetings based on availability.
• The Vice President shall lead the planning of an event/forum, in collaboration with the Cabinet, that introduces the newly inaugurated administration to the CSUN student body such as the President, Vice President, Senate and Cabinet.

a. This event will be held in the Fall semester of every academic year.

• The Vice President shall, in collaboration with the A.S. President, perform monthly check-ins with the University President and Vice President of Student Affairs to advocate for student needs and get updates on CSUN's administration.
• The Vice President shall perform monthly check-ins with the Department of Police Services. The meetings shall include the DPS Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and either the Chief or Deputy Chief, to communicate current feedback from students on security, and address any students' wellbeing concerns.

External

• The Vice President may represent CSUN at California State Student Association (CSSA) monthly plenaries and special meetings as needed.

Internal Organization

• The Vice President shall perform biweekly check-ins with the Associated Students Executive Director to communicate current organizational updates, collaboration opportunities, and address any concerns they may have.
• The Vice President shall, in consultation with the president, perform monthly check-ins with the program managers at the Assistant Director of Programs and Communication’s discretion to assess their needs, communicate current Leadership effort, collaboration opportunities, and address any concerns they may have.

Regulations:
The Vice President shall, in execution of their responsibilities, uphold the policies of:

• The United States Constitution
• The State of California
• California State University, Northridge
• Associated Students, Inc.
  

PARLIAMENTARY AUTHORITY:
All meetings called by the Vice President shall be conducted according to parliamentary law as set forth in Robert’s Rules or Order, Newly Revised.

ENABLING CAUSE:
This Code shall supersede all Codes written before May 8, 2023.
