Title: Chevron Oil Spill in San Francisco
1. WHEREAS: The Associated Students, Inc. (AS) is the official voice of over 38,000 students at California State University Northridge; AND
2. WHEREAS: AS is the primary advocate for students at CSUN and provides excellent, meaningful programs and services designed to create and enhance a spirited, learning focused campus environment; AND
3. WHEREAS: California's Office of Emergency Services (OES) says a pipeline was leaking approximately five gallons a minute until the leak was stopped around 4:40 p.m., February 10, 2021; AND
4. WHEREAS: According to Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia, "close to 600 gallons" flowed into the San Francisco Bay during that time; AND
5. WHEREAS: At the time of the spill, the Contra Costa Health Department issued a public health advisory for residents of Richmond, North Richmond and San Pablo.; AND
6. WHEREAS: Assembly Member Buffy Wicks plans to introduce a bill to increase fines and penalties to discourage further negligence.; AND
7. WHEREAS: Events such as the recurring Chevron oil spills in Richmond County is not the first and will not be the last incident of environmental irresponsibility.; THEREFORE, LET IT BE
1. RESOLVED: California State University, Northridge and Associated Student requests Chevron Richmond Refinery be held accountable for their misconduct and actions; AND LET IT BE FURTHER
2. RESOLVED: Associated Students requests Chevron Richmond Refinery be charged a base fine for clean up as well as environmental damages and 10% additional fine for the social cost of community inconvenience the caused from the oil spill; AND LET IT BE FURTHER
3. RESOLVED: Associated Students are to hold a special presentation in the senate meeting to raise awareness of the seriousness of improper handling of oil by large oil corporations.; AND LET IT BE FURTHER
4. RESOLVED: That copies of this resolution be distributed widely, including but not limited to the following:
