Senate Bill: 2020-21-001


Title: Resolution Condemning the Murder of George Floyd and the Police Brutality Responsible


1. WHEREAS: The Associated Students, Inc. (AS) is the official voice of over 38,000 students at California State University Northridge; AND

2. WHEREAS: AS is the primary advocate for students at CSUN; AND

3. WHEREAS: On May 25 2020, George Floyd was killed of asphyxiation as direct consequence of actions that police officers in the Minneapolis Police Department took; AND

4. WHEREAS: The murder of George Floyd is tragically only one of the most recent in a string of murders in the black community, perpetuated in this country since even before its founding; AND

5. WHEREAS: The murder of George Floyd is tragically in accordance with the historic conditions of America’s black population; AND

6. WHEREAS: CSUN has a vibrant black student population, which has demonstrated engagement, entrepreneurship and leadership amongst other qualities on campus; AND

7. WHEREAS: AS finds responsibility to take leadership and work to protect our black student population against potential violence; AND

8. WHEREAS: AS finds responsibility to boost the message of black activists and allies seeking an end to police brutality, murder, and injustice otherwise as perpetuated most severely against the black community; THEREFORE LET IT BE

1. RESOLVED: That AS condemns in the strongest possible manner the murder of George Floyd at the hands of law enforcement; AND LET IT BE FURTHER

2. RESOLVED: That AS seeks the arrest of all the officers involved with and complicit in the murder of George Floyd in the Minneapolis Police department; AND LET IT BE FURTHER

3. RESOLVED: That AS condemns police brutality in any context across this nation or others; AND LET IT BE FURTHER

4. RESOLVED: That AS will continue to advocate against police brutality, and work in coordination with the relevant student organizations across campus including but not limited to the Black Student Union, the Black Leadership Council, the Students of Color Coalition, and others, to formulate a more targeted response from CSUN students; AND LET IT BE FURTHER

5. RESOLVED: That AS Leadership will have a moment of silence once a year until 2025 during the first Senate meeting in honor of George Floyd and all lives lost due to Police Brutality; AND LET IT BE FURTHER

6. RESOLVED: That copies of this resolution be distributed widely, including but not limited to the following:
